Almost every large company has a corporate academy – an internal unit or program designed to develop and sustain institutional or individual capabilities, with the goal of improving performance. The first academies, which were established about 60 years ago, focused on training top leaders and followed a set curriculum. After realizing that this approach had a limited impact, while continuing to maintain their academies, companies adopted more flexible approaches to learning including coaching and on-the-job instruction, and then added training for the middle and frontline managers. This shift of focus of the academy was needed to support ongoing capability building for the entire enterprise.
